The continuous strike by the Yamaha motor workers has been called off on it’s 10 th day after reaching a tripartite agreement among the workers, labour department and the management.
Led by IYMTS, affiliated to CITU, 500+ permanent workers in Yamaha Motors manufacturing facility at Vallum Sipcot, near Shriperumbudur went on a strike on October 11 against the management’s unfair labour practices and union-breaking tactics through the creation of a rival pro-management union by bribing a small section of workers.

Their primary demand was the recognition of the union supported by majority of workers through free and fair voting using secret ballots. Workers’ unions in the nearby factories of Apollo tyres, Hyundai, MSI, Valeo lights, Taisumith etc also supported the workers on strike.
Although initially the management and the labour department were not willing to accept workers’ demands, as the strike continued and more more workers in the nearby factories showed solidarity, they were eventually compelled to accept it.
On October 18, CITU arranged protests in front of the Yamaha showrooms all throughout Tamilnadu. On October 19, workers in the factories of NSK, Taisumith, Roca Parriware, Mentor Printing, Filter CAT, Haworth, Hyundai boycotted their lunch in support of the Yamaha workers’ demand.
Despite the heavy police presence, on the evening of October 19, nearly 200 workers from various nearby factories gathered near the Vallum Sipcot gate in support of the Yamaha motor workers’.
On October 19, finally a tripartite agreement was reached and on October 20, morning, the strike has been called off. On October 20, 5 pm, the agreement was signed in front of the Additional Commissioner of Labour. The workers’ will join in their work from October 21. As per the agreement, within three months, there will be an election conducted via secret ballot to accept the union supported by majority of workers.
